Pierre Eugène Onfroy de Bréville (February 21, 1861 - September 24, 1949) was born on February 21, 1861, in Bar-le-Duc, Meuse, into a family that envisioned a traditional professional path for him. Yielding to his parents' wishes, he initially pursued legal studies with the ambition of entering a diplomatic career. However, his true passion for music soon eclipsed these plans. He abandoned law and enrolled in the Conservatoire de Paris, beginning his formal musical education under Théodore Dubois from 1880 to 1882. He subsequently sought out the mentorship of the esteemed César Franck, whose profound artistic philosophy deeply influenced his musical development.

As his career progressed, de Bréville balanced composition with academia and journalism. He joined the faculty of the Schola Cantorum in Paris, teaching counterpoint from 1898 to 1902. Following a twelve-year hiatus, he returned to teaching as a professor of chamber music composition at the Conservatoire de Paris between 1914 and 1918. Concurrently, he built a respected reputation as a discerning music critic, contributing insightful reviews and cultural commentary to prominent literary and artistic periodicals such as the Mercure de France, Le Courrier musical, and La Revue blanche.

Though his catalog of works was not expansive, de Bréville approached composition with meticulous care and refined craftsmanship. His commitment to the French musical tradition was further demonstrated when he collaborated with fellow composers Vincent d'Indy and Ernest Chausson to complete the orchestration of César Franck's unfinished opera Ghishelle. In his personal life, he shared a meaningful partnership with Maurice Bagès. Pierre de Bréville passed away on September 24, 1949, in Paris, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated composer, pedagogue, and champion of Franck's artistic circle.
